Loose coils on stator?

Hello All <br />I have a 1972 Evinrude 50hp outboard<br />(Model# 50273 C) (Serial# E01322) It has started to show a power drop on top end. It will idle OK but when you goto to full throttle it will run fine for 30 sec. and then it will fall off plane and drop RPM dramatically, if you throttle back it will run fine but if you leave it at full throttle it will not stall but it's unable to maintain planning speed and it will act like you are going from full throttle to idle back and forth very fast. At first I thought it was fuel related so I put a new fuel hose and a new fuel pump on but nothing changed so after reading a few post I decided to check the coils on the stator. I can wiggle 3 of the 6 on the stator under the flywheel. So Does any one know if the coils can be tested without removing the flywheel and if it test OK can it be tightened or is it a part you must replace and how much does a stator cost to repair? Also is it more likely the stator or a fuel related problem? It has good compression and good spark when I try it in the driveway. I think I will still go through the carbs just because it has not been done in a while. Thanks in advance for any help<br />Musky14

Welcome to iboats Musky!<br /><br />You could be looking at two different issues. I think the problem your having is fuel related and I would go with the carb cleaning/overhaul. Make sure you blow all passages out with carb cleaner and follow up with compressed air. Install a new kit which can be got through you local dealer.<br /><br />The lose coils, I think, can be a different problem. Do you see any signs of the coils scraping the flywheel? How lose is lose? The keepers that hold the coils on are probably lose. I don't know exactly how you could tighten them up. Maybe one of the other guys have run into this before and can help. If they are real lose, You may be looking at replaceing the stator.

i have ben running a 73 50 hp anda 74 they are the same except the eletricshift that ended in 74 . mine has don that from carbs and one time a coil was breaking down . try pumping the bulb or choke it momintarley .loss of a culinder will idle smooth but want go under preasure .the last time i had the 73 out it wouldnt go at all . pulled the drainplugs out of the bowl and ran a wire thw size of a spinner bait in it into the highspeed jet . pump the bulb to wash it out . it ran greata all day . papasage

Musky, I've had 2 motors act like that. One was the stator and the other one had corrosion between the crankshaft and the flywheel, so before you go and buy any parts try cleaning the mating surfaces on the crankshaft and on the flywheel and give it another try.

Thanks for the input on my problem Papasage / OBJ / Walker. The coils can be wiggled at most a 1/4 inch but without pulling the flywheel it is hard to see if they are rubbing or not. Do you think I should pull the flywheel and take a look? I think you need a special tool to do this, is that correct? The next time I take it out I will try to spray some fuel into the carbs to see if it makes any difference. Walker, was the corrosion causing a grounding problem for you or was it something else it was affecting? Thanks again for your input.<br />Musky14

The flywheel has to get good ground through the crankshaft.

Update:<br /> I took the boat out last night to check out things. At first the boat had the same old problem so I hit the chock and it picked up a bit so I tried to pump the bulb and that did not help so I just kept pumping the bulb and all of a sudden she took off so I ran it for 45 min full throttle and it seems to have fixed it self. Guess I got lucky for once. Now what do I do about the loose coils on the stator? Since it runs OK now can I just leave it (If it aint broke don't fix it)? For all I know those coils could have been loose for as long as I have owned it. What damage could happen if I left the coils loose?<br />Thanks all for the help<br />Musky14
