I just bought a 1985 Johnson 90hp... and was wondering if it was a x-flow or a looper?

This may sound dumb but what is the difference between an x-flow and a looper. I have an 1984 70hp Evinrude. What would it be.

A 1984 70 would be a looper. As a matter of fact, ALL OMC/BRP 3-cylinders are loopers.

Loopers are generally considered to be a more efficient design, having to do with the way fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber. It literally loops on its way in. A crossflow is just that, the fuel crosses the combustion chamber on its way in from the intake ports and out through the exhaust ports (after it is ignited and burned (mostly)).

Lots of posts here on the boards regarding the technical sides of both. A search should give you a good couple hours worth of reading...

Crossflows usually have domed pistons that push the flow across the combustion chamber, whereas loopers have flat-topped pistons and the flow is controlled by the arrangement of the intake ports.

It's my understanding that the loopers offer the consumer a little more GITEUP!! because of their design, and are a bit more fuel efficient as well, however the x-flows are pretty rugged and a well built little tank themselves. It should offer you good dependable service for a lot of years, with the proper maintnance and upkeep of course. Do yourself a favor and get an OEM Service/Parts Manual to perform any and all necessary repairs, within your mechanical abillity, yourself. You'll be glad you did............ALAN

What was your question again "b.gagnon"? Just kidding around........Sorry to have clouded your post........ o:)
