Looking to Purchase a used Sea Doo...what do you think?

I'm looking into purchasing a 95 GTX with a locked up motor. I can get the ski and trailer really cheap. My question was, won't I be ok with getting this and just buying a SBT rebuilt motor for it and be done with it? It's in really good shape and everything is there. The pump was rebuilt last year.

Thanks,
Jason

you do realize what you have to do to the engine before you trade it in and after you get it, it isn't just swap it out and go ride, every part has to come off the long block and be put on the replacement engine and you need some special tools to do that, plus a book for torques and valve timing etc and I am curious as to the good price if it isn't being too nosey!! I was curious because your idea of a good price may not be a good price, that hull design was in my opinion one of the worst, the seat is like sitting on a board and too low to be comfortable, I have owned 2 and a 96 gti with the same hull, for a couple of hundred dollars and you like playing with engines it may be ok but if you never owned a ski or never built an engine on one you will probably be facing doing the carbs and fuel system, if it has been sitting for a length of time, all parts for skies are usually expensive, and you can get way more time and money invested it it than it is worth.

Yes,
I am aware that everything has to come off the old motor to be put on the new one. I'm very fimiliar with engines as I have built many racing drag motors for cars. As fas the special tools needed, what all will I need to do it? If I bought the manaul from SBT would that give me the torque specs in it?

As far as price....he is selling the ski for $800 as is. Everything is there, it just lost xompression on one of the cylinders. He said he was riding it one day and the oil injector line broke going to that cylinder and starved the motor of oil. Didn't never lock up, just started making a noise and he shut it off.

Thanks,
Jason

it's your money but that is twice what you should be paying for it, you need a pto tool and a degree wheel and a climer book all can be had from s b t plus while it is apart take the drive wheel off the oil pump and go to pre mix leave the pump and use the cable to keep your throttle tension correct but plug off the pump lines to the rotary valve cover, and be sure to leave the tank in and oil in it for the rotary valve compartment,

Well......I haven't fullly decided on what I'm going to do just yet. I appreciate the advice and I'll defintly keep it in mind. Can you explain to me a little bit about Rotary Timing and how it is done?

Thanks,
Jason

here is why that is a bad idea,, the nada retail value of that ski with a trailer is 1490,, you pay 800 and with the tools, book, shipping to and from sbt, plus the basic warranty engine you will have at least 850 more involved that comes out to 1650 plus all your labor and if nothing else is wrong, you would be better off just giving your friend a couple hundred dollars and forgetting the entire venture and let him keep his ski, Im kidding but hopefully you get the idea.

Also....with it having one cylinder down and hasn't actually locked up...would you just do a top end rebuild or go the whole way?

Thanks again,
Jason

Now let me tell you how to get all the fixer uppers you want for little to nothing, find a local paper lots have free adds or really low price adds place an add worded like this, cash for your unwanted jet ski running or not, I had people calling me and having me remove them for free just to get rid of them, those can be sold for parts as you get familiar with how to take them apart and how they work, then you fall on a good one and you pay a little for it and have all the parts you need for free, and sell what you don't need on the internet, just get titles, try it and see .

now to answer your question the engine is B A D forget it, If someone gave me that ski and coincidently I just had one given to me with a engine that ran,, I traded the engine for a sea doo gtx s/c jet pump , I would spend a day disassembling the ski and part it out, I would not bother to fix it because the crank is bad, simple as that and I even sold the empty hull from the one I was given. funny because I was taking the hull to the dump when a guy saw it and wanted to buy it.. go figure.
