Hello all. I could use some help locating the tach lead on me 2004 Mercruiser 5.0L MPI. My gages are smartcraft, so I don't have a lead under the dash. All of my gages are daisy chain connected with the same three wires red, yellow, blue...

My distributer cap is not the normal round style, it's flat with the spark plug connectors coming out of the sides. The is a coil has a three pin connector going to it with the following wires.

1. Pink with white stripe
2. White with green stripe
3. White with green stripe (again)

I would imagine that one of them is a tach lead, but I don't want to go stabbing at them without knowing more. I did also try connecting to a gray wire in the left of two wire harnesses connected to the ECM which did not work.

Also the flat distributer also has a three pin connector coming off of it. There is nothing plugged into it. I guess it was for systems with an integrated coil or something...

Any help would be great!

lets start with this...
what exactly are you trying to do? are you installing something that requires a tach signal?

I sure hope you didn't damage that wire in any way, that is your 5 volt power from the ECM to all the sensors. You mess that up and you won't have anything workable.

There should be a female pin connector on the engine for a tachometer lead. It's a Gray/White wire.

Got it working! Thanks for the help.

I'm connecting up a perfect pass unit. I didn't see a gray/white stripe wire. The tach is working after connecting to the middle white with green striped wire that I mentioned in the earlier post...

I was going to say, my 5.0 MPI has a little tag on a wire that says "TACH" and it's green/white with a female connector crimped on it. I was going to go out and check for sure, but it looks like you've solved it.:D
