Looking for stronger seats

Ive been looking at different seats for awhile, but Im not sure of the structural strength of them.

I bought Wally World seats last year and I really hate them.... Why I hate them is because they are so flimsy I expect them to break in half at any moment. (my 8 year old grandson can get them to flex) One is on a pedestal and one is on a box base, but they both flex right backwards. Im 6'2" - 260 and I need a rugged seat that doesnt flex so much.

Seems most all of the seats are made of plastic, which would be fine if they were strong enough. Some of them are pretty pricey too, so Im wondering if anybody has had good luck with a certain kind/brand as far as weight handling capacity. I can find comfort in any chair pretty much, so comfort isnt a huge deal really. Im standing up fishing 80% of the time anyway.

I like the looks of the Attwood Centric/II, just not sure if its strong.

Any opinions or suggestions from the "larger" crowd??

You can always have one custom made at an upholstery shop. Specify 3/4-1" ply for the seat & back, 5" hi-density foam, and SS brackets. It would hold up a tank.

Re: Looking for stronger seats

I have Wise bucket seats in mine and they are quite sturdy. Not exactly cheap though! http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2602.jpg

I was checking these out Ez, and they were high on my list of candidates.

So these are pretty sturdy huh? Like 260lbs sturdy? I realize my Wally seats are junk, and they are probably the bottom of the barrel. I want to get some strong seats even if they cost quite a bit. I dont want to be looking for better seats every year, so Im willing to pay more to get something that will hold me up.

I thought about going this route too, but Im thinking theres gotta be a seat on the market thats heavy duty.

They dont really go into detail about seat strength though, just comfort and resistance to marine situations.

Hummm, Wal/Mart, ya get what ya pay for, and if its not much, ya get, not much. I have heavy SS side brackets, and bottom mounts. They where on the boat when I purchased it.

Yeah I bought these seats because I wanted to get on the water quick, and after all the other costs of restoring I didnt have much cash left over for quality seats. I figured they would be cheezy, just not this cheezy...

Absolutely. I'm 230 but I tend to flop on seats :D

I understand about the money thing, Overtons has seats also. I have a overstock marine store close by, and they have alot of good stuff for reasonible prices. But as they say, BOAT= Bust out another $1000.00. Toys of any kind cost money. Hope you find something.

I personaly would stay with alum or SS side brackets, if your a bigger dude. There more money, but Im not sure about plastic side brackets for your weight. Just my .02

Mine have aluminum hinges, not sure about the side brackets, but the plastic base itself flexes like a wet noodle when I sit on em. I think they are Action brand? They have an A on the backrest.

Those Garelick seats were another I was looking at, but the colors werent ideal.

You can get them in many other colors. I have a buddy thats over 300lbs, and he purchased seats with heavy alum hinges, and took off the plastic mount, and screwed 1/8 thick alum plate to the bottom, and then bought a heavy steel mount, and screwed it to the alum plate through to the wood bottom base. It worked great for him.

This is exactly what I had originally thought of doing.

I might just try this and see how well it works, then I could wait awhile on new seats.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for stronger seats

I have the lowback saltwater series and they will hold up with you on them. I'm also 260.
More great real-use info, thanks.

So you use the same seats I was looking at in the link? Id be ok with $99 a seat if they hold me upright!
