looking for some job advice.

So here's the deal. I am working currently as a apartment maintenance tech, and I like my job. I have a opportunity to leave my job to work for another guy making over double my salary. However his job is knot a 3-6 month gig, (wich translates to 6-9 months of my current salary). My wife likes the idea of higher pay, but dislikes the idea of loosing a long term steady income.

Just wondering what your thoughts are. Do I go, or stay?

Thanks.

Re: looking for some job advice.

You have to determine how you can financially survive the time without working and the possibility of the job not being renewed the following year. What if, in the time off, he meets someone who will do the job for 20% less than he's paying you? What if you hate the place? What if it's not what you expected or you're not what he expected?

This is a terrible economy to be jobless in. IMHO, I would stay at a place that I know the paycheck will continue until I found a full-time gig with better pay. Stay or go? Only you can make that decision. I hope for the best for you.

I just had to make this decision. I stayed. If it was a year contract then maybe, but 6 months or less? Forget it.

The math is a net loss of money and a gain of time. I'd have a hard time living with a loss of income these days. The time gain wouldn't be bad ... but you'd probably spend it wondering where you were going to get more money.

I wouldn't reccomend leaving a steady job in this economy.

I'm with these guys ^^^ stability is everything in a bad economy.

For comparison, I had an offer last year to work for a small company that has been in business for just a few years at 1/3 more pay than I am making now.. I declined, I work for a local government that has a good reliable tax base. If that offer had come along in a good economy I would have taken it.

In this economy, you stay put! You'll earn more in the long run. Someone is just waiting for you to quit so there will be no going back no matter what's said at the time of your departure. Trust no one and cherrish what you have!

I think it's a good choice too - at least against that particular job.

Good choice ... I just talked through a similar situation with a friend ... he could stay at his current job which was rocky or take a pay cut and go to a job with much better security and much more ability to advance. He went with the lower pay and took the new job at a local state university.

Glad you went with the stability instead of the $. You will be glad you did in the end.
