Were looking to buy a new TV and was wondering what yall might suggest. Brand, type, and why one brand may be better than the other.

Would like to keep in the 27-32 inch size range, and in the 1000.00 $ neighborhood.

I dont want plasma.....

We looked at some TVs today, and we kinda like the flat screen tube type picture the best.

About the only thing I know about the new TVs is how to turn them on (and thats ?able). :D

Don't do the "bought a great BW TV just before everything went color" thing, RP. Been there.

Get something at least HD ready and wide (16X9) screen. That wont become obsolete in 6 months.

The best CRT sets still give the sharpest picture, but LCD are much smaller footprint and lighter. A 32" CRT set is BIG and HEAVY.

I would look for a wide screen LCD set by Sony or another leading brand.

Did some serious shopping just a few months ago and found both the best selection and the best prices at Circuit City.

Good luck. :)

Re: Looking For New TV

We just got a 36 inch Sony HD tv with a tube. As JB mentioned you need to go HD. The lcds have crap for side angle and are alot pricer then the tube ones. The downside is the sony I bought weighs 250 lbs and was a bear to get up on the wall unit. If we sell this house the TV is staying. Also keep in mind if you go with a HD set you will need new cables for your DVD and playstation that are HD compatable. They run about 80 bucks for the dvd and 40 for the playstation.

Real Poor, 1000 bucks isn't gonna get you into the new melinnea. If that is your strict budget you are going to have to stick to a CRT. The good news is that 32" flat screen TVs can be had for under 600 bucks.

I bought a Sony 32" Flat screen about 3-4 years ago. That was close to 1K but I've seen some good names lately for, as I said, under 600.

I have, however, since moved on to a 43" rear projection Toshiba. I have a moderate size family room with about 11-12 radius to the seating area. Even though the picture is technically not as good as a CRT, I could never go back. You'd probably have to spend about $1500 to go there.

Re: Looking For New TV

Last November I bought a 27" Panasonic flat screen with a built in DVD player and VCR and virtual surround sound. Was not for the main viewing, so I went cheap. Paid about $450 for it at Sears and I am really impressed. The sound is GREAT - has caught me checking behind me for the source of sound on a couple of occasions now - the picture quality is decent, and the price was great. $ for $, I am impressed with it.

Re: Looking For New TV

The Sony will be a good set for you RP.

As for LCD's. They are right now, the priciest format out there even out-distancing Plasma and I find them detestable. The lCD formula has been around quite a few years and they still can't get rid of pixel lag nor get very good black saturation.

Plasma's are OK but still pricey. Like the LCD's, they have problems rendering pure black area's of a picture. They also generate a great deal of heat.

If I was going to go with a HD projection right now I'd stay with a DLP, probably Samsung. I'd skip the LCD rear projo's, same problem with pixel lag.
