Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Why Merc, Kevlar? Most folk tend to avoid what has hurt them. Why not Yamaha, OMC, Suzi, Honda. . . Have you noticed how many Yammy failures show up on this forum? I think I remember two or three in the past three months. How about Suzukis? Even fewer!! Modern (10 years old or less) OMCs and Mercs seem to have some problems, but all together not as many as everybody's favorite whipping boy: FORCE! Well, forget Force, but please consider the brands that have proved themselves reliable in the toughest environment of all: this forum.

It is true that you are going to have a tough time finding a good used Yammy or Suzi at a Force or Merc price, but you get what you pay for and you say that "good running" is what you want to pay for, so go for it.

Have fun shopping.
JB

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Hey JB,

The $$ issue is a big one, I just don't see any Yams or Zukies used or at an affordable price. There are lots of folks who love their Mercs because they have ran for the last 30 years for them. My Merc
came to me as a rebuild, or so I was told, when it was torn apart there were lots of things that did not look professional..... So I don't think I was burned by Merc in general, but because a shop hack did a questionable job on a rebuild. I know there have to be a ton of good Mercs just sittin here in Minnesota, because of all the lakes......

Thanks again for the thoughts!!

Did you try looking in the Star Trib?? There were a couple that match. Also, look at www.warnersdock.com. They have a clean looking 82 115 for $1995. Also try www.boattraderonline.com. They have a parts section that you may be able to find a match or even a rebuilt powerhead.

I'm from Burnsville, and based on the weather we are having, you don't need to worry about your equipment..

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the help, I called the Star trib ads, The Merc 115 was yet to be rebuilt...
Guy was a touch spacey. So not going that way, I have been scanning the boat trader, couple leads. I am not interested in the Chrysler, but thanks for the thought.

Keep em coming!!

hey, kevlar...maybe you should re evaluate your request....dont get me wrong, a day i can spend wrenching on nothing but 'towers of power' is a GOOD day in my life, but really a IL6 from mid 70's??? odds are money wasted on somebody elses troubles......fix what you got [a known problem, no surprizes] or upgrade to sumtin newer.....

ODDD1 makes a lot of sense, Kevlar. What would you have to pay if you found a verifiably good running big, old Merc?? With advice from ODDD1 and our other Mercsperts you can probably make a new one out of what you now have for less.

Good luck.
JB

Hey guys, now I am going to start crying....I have a IL6 140hp that runs great, and it's not too bad to rebuild....you just have to loose all your hair on it and let your children learn new words they didn't know exist....

Anyway, I could ask the guy with the Merc how much does he want for the bad one to be rebuilt ?

Val

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Hey, you guys are all onto something, or "on"
something, I am tryin to figure out which...

The options lookin at me are ya, I could rebuild for 1800.00 plus or so I was told, (they charge a bunch in the city) It would likely mean that the season is lost, we get three good months in MN, I now missed one of em. I believe I can find a Merc in the 1000.00 smackers range ( don't need trim ). A guy on Boat Classics gave a good point which was you can spend a fortune to rebuild, lose a season or you can find on of the many good outboards just sittin in some retirees garage
waitin , just waitin, for some Glastron love.
I got a honeymoon coming up, and the plan is to head "Up North" for what we call the boating good life, now a twelve foot aluminum
just doesn't cut it for what we have in mind.
I figure if I were to go buy another CV16 with an engine on it I would buy it without insisting on a rebuilt Merc. I could find one for less than the cost of a rebuild. So I would guess that there has to be a good engine waitin for a good guy to buy it. It really comes down to time lost on something that keeps me happy. I am cranky when I can't boat, pleeeeeze take my crankiness away.... Now, If I could just sell that film script I been writin.....$$$

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

My apologies, Kevlar. Having lived just west of the twin cities for a few years I should have remembered: 1. Boating season is so short., and 2. Minnesotans do a year worth of boating in those three months.

Too bad it is so hard to ship a used outboard (DOT Reg.s). Otherwise we could search the entire country for you.

Good luck.
JB

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Hey Valv,

I wish it was about what I want to spend vs what I was told it would cost. We have about 1200.00 or so dollars that we can budget for this, so we have to juggle the bucks carefully, as we won't do credit for a non emergency. It's a good rule.... As I tear up the credit card application sitting on the table... lol

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Sorry,

I didn't get ya. Well, I have to keep the tilt
and trim for a replacement engine (keeps my cost down), but the lower unit is good, just had the seals done... I figure 395.00 or best offer... Where are you at , Minnesota?

Re: looking for Midwest Merc 115 to 150

Kevlar,
I am afraid I cannot go that high. After all the new parts I'll have to put in it it will be too high priced.

I live near Faribault.

Thank you anyway

Don't sweat it, I appreciate the inquirey. I think I may have found my Merc from a Merc mechanic in Skanni. He has interest in my Merc on trade..... So the costs should be manageable.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice!!!!!!
