Volvo Penta AQ255a, 350 Chevy, still on points (Mallory Flatcap...DON"T tell me to junk it, as thats NEXT years upgrade! Only need to get 2 more months out of the old Flatty)
Anyway, Resistor went bad today. I had a spare from years ago that came with the used boat, but on opening the box (Standard RU-4) this is an open resistor, meaning as you can see the wire coil. Now, the old one was sealed in some sort of epoxy. I searched and searched, and all ignition parts on many sites all just show the usual caps, points, etc. Does this NEED to be a sealed (Marine) unit? Or can I replace this with something else that is the equivalent that is Marine rated if so. I can find 100 resistors for cars, but having trouble finding Marine. I will try Napa on the next trip to town, but could not find any Marine at there site. Any help is of course very much appreciated. Thanks..

Robbie,
There is no marine ballast resistor. Just use a good one, I have used Mallorys in the past. Or you could eliminate the ballast resistor and use an internal resistor coil.

Dave

Re: Looking for ignition coil resistor info

I was thinking that. I figured it would act just like a fuse, with failure a non-sparking event. Never had too deal with this before, as this is the only one of my toys with left with points. And if you don't think things happen for a reason, this is a perfect example of my "Angels" keeping an eye on me. As I was poking back there with a meter on the coil, and checking the wires for good connections, the wire that goes to the distributer from the coil fell off. Bad crimp!
Fixed that, then jumped the resistor, and it ran fine. The neatest thing here is, I am pulling my 20 footer out of the slip today, and the biggie goes in Monday with high tide, so all this has happened in my driveway. AND it was ready to go, but I decided yesterday to start it again anyway, and it would not stay running! The boating Gods are with me. Thanks for your help. Robby
