Reference previous post on repairing a 1997 Nissan 3.5B HP 2-stroke, problems with lower unit.

"Plan B" is to consider buying off Craigslist, a 2006 Tohatsu model MFS 3.5A long shaft used on a Ericson 23 sailboat in the brackish waters of Pamlico Sound. Like new condition, I expect low numbers on hours being on a sailboat. Owner flushed outboard when he returned home.

Owner is asking $800 for a seven year old outboard, that probably can be bought brand new for about a grand.

NADA book puts average retail at about $250.00, which I realize is just a guide, but there are few listings on websites for this motor to compare prices. Ebay just lists new motors.

Its hard to estimate price if you haven't looked at it or watch it run, but I'm trying to find a fair price for both of us, so that each of us gives up some $$$ to get something in the end.

Assume like new condition, low hours, runs fine. I was thinking about $350-$450.

Any counsel will be appreciated.

In our shop, any fresh water motor that is a current model, and is used, but "like new", gets priced at 1/2 the price of brand new. With used motors, condition is everything. Unless it was done last year, expect that it's time for servicing the water pump, of course, just due to age. In salt, many motors don't survive the effects of corrosion after 10 years. Hear it run. Check cooling and compression and oils (both crankcase and LU). Offer $500. See what happens.
