Looking for correct motor flushing earmuffs

I have an 86 (i believe) 85hp Force outboard. The water intake at the lower unit is close to the prop, on the conical shape of thre housing. I have not found the correct earmuffs for flushing this motor after salt water use. So far, I have to tilt the engine into a large container to flush it. Any info on the availability of the right earmuffs would be appreciated.

Mike,

I have a 1984 85 HP Force and the muffs do not work.
I bought a large tote at W....mart and fill it when I need to work on the engine.
All of the posts I have read about muffs on Force engines say they do not work.
You need to fill the water almost up to the cavitation plate, in my experience.
Then I use a siphon hose to drain, as it is a bit heavy to tip over.

Good Luck,

I bought a cheap set of earmuffs, and bent the metal rod in between just enough to fit over the round part of the housing, it works fine! But, on startup of these Force motors you must first turn the water on slow, then increase the pressure once it's running. That did the trick for me.

By the way, I forgot to mention, I put them on from the back, under the prop.

PB44,

I have an 85hp Force and the muffs work fine. Get the round muffs with the strong spring (looks like a hairpin). When you put them on, wet the rubber and slide them onto the bullet from the top or bottom until you cover the inlet. Water will continue to come out of them as you are running as your hose is putting out more water than can enter the ports at one time.

I believe you can get these at Bass Pro.

I either got mine at west marine or walmart. They're the type where water comes out of both sides. I find that they work best when you have the motor tilted up a little bit. They don't work well with the motor all the way down, I tilt the motor up about 20 degrees.
