Looking for advice on OMC Sterndirves

I am contemplating the purchase of an 1987 Searay with an OMC Cobra sterndrive package. The only OMC I have ever owned was a Johnson OB, great motor. I have owned 3 mercruiser packages and would prefer one, but this boat is what I would like--except for the OMC part. The local Searay dealer told me he would have no problem buying a used OMC and that parts are still avaialable. The boat is FS by a private party, dealer has no gain in the deal. Any comments?

This is the introductory year for this sterndrive. Consequently there were many problems with it,most involing the shift cable and gear/clutch dog enegagement.If these areas have been addressed ,I see no problem provided you have someone in your area familiar with them.
