Looking for a prop gasket for 2004 Mercury 8hp

Does someone have a link to a parts list/diagram so I can find a seal/gasket for the motor above....I have an oil leak coming from the prop I would like to fix.

Also is that pretty easy to fix...any special tools required?

sorry to ask...but is this a 2 stroke engine ? If it is...you sure it isn't just 2 stroke oil ? or is it definitely coming from the main seal ?

No worries...Yes it is a 2-stroke. I believe it is coming from the seal...I will try to take a picture and post it up.

Ok...I would probably not dismiss that as being unburnt 2 stroke oil residue, looking at it. Gear oil usually isn't black in colour. If I was a betting man...I would say that was 2 stroke out the exhaust and nothing to worry about. Very common.

more I look, the more I am convinced that's just 2 stroke oil there. You could crack open the gear oil drain screw and see what is in there. I think it will look very different from that. You can usually tell by the smell too. There is no mistaking gear oil..horrible stuff. Usually be green or blue colour, if it is the stuff it is meant to be. If your seal was gone, the gear oil might be milky.

If it was winterized/storage sealed that could be the oils running out or a poor type of 2cycle oil in the fuel mix.

Yeah, it appears it was a cheaper 2 cycle oil. I was going to go with a merc oil.

Spot on...Thought it might be just 2 stroke...it just happens sometimes when the oil mix has been a little rich or the plugs aren't at their best..perhaps even low rpm sustained use, then put in storage...then you can get just exactly this...nothing to worry about.

If you live in the USA you can use Amsoil Saber OUTBOARD at ratios from 50:1-100:1 I used it for years, they also have gear lube in a squeeze pak.

Some of the oil that is mixed with the gas goes right through the motor.---- It does nothing but shock the owner when it leaks on the floor.

A 2 stoke will do that no matter the oil used....Unplug the fuel line also if attached.

So follow up question. Stuck the motor in some water and ran it....really smoky and the water was super oily. Normal? I have had 2 strokes before and I don't believe they smoked this much.

Could it be too rich a mixture? I also checked the plugs...one was pretty dark and one looked brand new. The guy before me may have just switched one out.

It is perfectly normal for your motor to do that. Stop looking for things to be wrong with it , or sell it and buy a 4 strk

Change the plugs…fresh fuel at 50-1. All in the world will be well. Rather smoke, than no smoke.

One new plug and one dark and oily may mean that the motor is running on just 1 cylinder.-----Post the compression numbers.-----See if spark jumps a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on both leads.

Took it out this afternoon with my wife...it ran really good. Got it up to about 16mph with the both of us. Not bad for a 14' aluminum. Starts on first or second pull.
