Hi Guys,
I have to replace the lower unit on my 2000 Trophy 22 walkaround. The motor is a regular Mercury 150 XL 1999 year- Anyone done this? Now here lies the problem (I already spoke to Mercury guess what no help) Is the lower unit standard rotation and also is this rotation 2:1 or 1.87:1. It seems mercury made these two types or four if you count the counter rotations which I'm going to say most likely would apply to to dual engine model boats. So I'm pretty sure its standard rotation, but without already breaking the lower unit off and marking the shafts to see which ratio it has, is there another way to determine which one trophy used? Yes I can take it off which I am going to do, but I'd like to shop around for the replacements price and knowing which one to look for would be important prior to purchasing. Thanks

You don't need to take it off.
Mark the prop, then turn the engine over by hand with a wrench 2 turns exactly, with the shifter in forward. It's best to pull the plug wires for safety, as accidental ignition could be pretty nasty to fatal.

If it's 2:1, the prop will make exactly one turn. If it's 1.87:1, it'll go past 1 turn a little.

Look at the prop. It will be left handed on a counter rotation lower. It's worth looking. Few were installed as singles, but it's possible.

Why are you replacing the LU?

hope it helps

If your motor is the 2.0 liter its is 2.1 ratio, if its a 2.5 liter or Optimax its a 1.87 ratio. You can get both ratios & shaft lenghts thru SEI for $795. It is the same unit iBoats sells for $895 and has a 3 year warranty.
Here is list of gear ratios for V-6 units
Mercury 2.0L 150hp 5000-5600 max rpm 2.00/1 ratio
Mercury 2.5L/2.5L EFI 150/175hp 5000-5600 max rpm 1.87/1 ratio
Mercury ('99) 2.5L 200hp 5000-5600 max rpm 1.87/1 ratio
Mercury 2.5L EFI 200hp 5000-5800 max rpm 1.87/1 """"
Mercury 3.0L 225 hp 5000-5500 '' '' 1.75/1 " "
Mercury 3.0L EFI 225 hp 5000-5800 " " 1.75/1 """"""
Mercury XB 3.0L EFI 250 hp 5800-6100 (6250)" 1.75/1 """""
Mercury Optimax 2.5L 150 hp 5000-5600 " " 1.87/1 """""
Mercury Optimax 3.0L 200/225hp 5000-5750 " " 1.75/1 """"
