I am looking for a used lower unit for a 1974 Johnson 15hp. Does anyone have any ideas on where to look? Also does anyone know what years will interchange lowers w/ this model. What should I expect to pay? Thanks

You are looking at anywhere from $25.00 to $350.00 depending on what condition, and who is selling it. They are always on the infamous auction site. Is yours cracked, or have water damage?

I'm fairly certain the lower units for the 9.9 and 15hp Evinrude/Johnsons remianed unchanged from 1974 to at least 1992 possibly even later. I do believe the splines on the upper end of the drive shaft did change so you would have to use your old drive shaft if you bought a later model lower unit. In terms of what to pay it all depends upon the seller. New/rebuilt vs good used. The first place I would check is the webvertise section of the AOMCI. http://www.aomci.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=Webvertize
These are good guys who are hobbiest and not out there to screw somebody. someone surely will have one at a good price.

Re: Looking for a lower unit for 1974 Johnson 15hp

Thanks for the replies. When I bought the motor the bearring carrier was broke out of the lower and the gears / bearings were rusted pretty bad. I have rebuilt the lower on a 2007 Johnson 15hp, but that was due to a busted pinion gear and everything else was in good shape. The more I look at the parts cost it seems that I would be better to just find a good used lower then try to rebuild what I have.
