Greetings,
I'm finally getting around to replacing the tiller handle on my '00 bf40 and I ran into a problem. (I had a bad prop strike that sheared the prop and snapped the tiller right off the engine) I use the honda tiller extension on the outboard and it came with a tiller reinforcing kit to make the handle stiffer.

Here's my problem....when I got the new handle, it appears Honda changed the tiller handle casting mold and the reinforcer no longer fits. Not a problem, I got out the tools and modified the reinforcing bracket and now it fits just fine. Except for one thing, the bolts that hold it together aren't long enough. They are Marine stainless Steel, Hex head, metric, 6mm, 1.0 pitch threads, 40 mm long. What I am trying to find is that same bolt in 50mm length. (6mm,1.0,50mm) I've been all over town and no one seams to carry that size in stainless. My dealer cant help, and most places on the internet only sell in bulk. I only need 2. Does anyone have a source for Stainless bolts that will sell in small quantity

Thanks
Nav

First of all, make sure that that part search got you the correct part.Honda has changed tillers on current units, but I am not aware of any changes to backfits. That does'nt mean they did'nt ,I'M just not privy, and Honda part search can be a little tough on a rookie,SOO ,double check with the service manager or the boss to make sure you are not a victim of ignorance or post a nice model # here and we might be able to help with the proper part numbers.

Hondon,
The new handle fits perfectly and I am using the same kit that I used for years on the old handle.

Modifying the bracket was easy. All I had to do was grind a bit off of one of the ends. Apparently they increased the thickness on the handle because when I use the original bolts that came with the kit, they only make it half way into the nut. The hard part is finished. Now all I need to do to bolt it together.

All I am really looking for is a couple of Stainless M6,1.0,50mm bolts. :)

Thanks,
Nav
