Ruger American .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO Bolt-Action Rifle with Vortex Crossfire II Scope yes I could install a scope on a WW2 Mauser (now 308) or others I have but this is a purpose built longer range hunting rifle - thoughts?

The ruger is a sweet weapon, for hogs.

Better off with a Primary Arms 4-14 first focal plane ACSS 308/5.66mm DMR recticle scope.

Some people that have only spent time dealing with a regular crosshair scope may complain about it being too cluttered. I strongly disagree with this if you plan on hitting anything accurately on varying distances farther than 200 yards.

Study the reticle and practice with it, and you'll be impressed with the results.

Excellent scope for the money up to 800 yards with wind hold overs.

Get it calibrated/zero'd at 200 yards for the 200 yard mark if you're going to be shooting farther than 500 yards.

Get it calibrated at the correct 100 yard zero if shooting less than 500 yards.

The Ruger is a good choice and the caliber is also good. If the Mauser is original, doing a D&T would not be cost effective. It would reduce the gun's value and the accuracy would not be up to the Ruger.
