I am looking at buying a 96 SeaDo XP. I went and looked at it on Sunday, and took it for a test on the water. We cranked it many times and it fired up each time with no problems. It would also idle with no issues. But when I went to give it some gas, it would not get any power and would bog/misfire.
What are some things that could be wrong with it? It reminded me of what my Suzuki outboard was doing about 1 month ago. It idled perfect and would start up with no issues, but when I gave it gas, it just would not get any power. As it turned out my spark plugs where nasty and worn. As soon as I replaced then, it was good to go.
The guy that is selling it, said he had not used it almost all year long.
I've never owned a jet ski, so your advice is greatly appreciated.

I am no expert and am relatively new to the PWC world, but I CAN tell you that they are extremely sensitive to the condition of the spark plugs.

My '01 SeaDoo had similar symptoms recently and a new set of plugs completly cured it!

that has a 787 engine with 2 carbs, it could be old fuel, or clogged carb filters, worn diaphragms in the carbs , also it may have a bad ground wire and the ignition coil is cutting out.

It does not seem like this guy is in any kind of a hurry to get the maintenence work done. How much would you offer for this PWC in the described condition?

Re: Looking at a 96 SeaDo XP

How about $500 8) I called this guy up on Friday night and flatout offered him $500 for it, and he jumpd on it. So now I am the proud owner of my first jet ski. Hopefully we can get it running right with minimal effort. I got this thing mainly for the kids. I have a bass boat, but the kids mainly want to go out and cut up.

I will do the maintenance on it that was describled above and see how it works out. Is there anything else I should do, before I put it on the water?

Re: Looking at a 96 SeaDo XP

I started out with the spark plugs today, they where pretty fouled up, plus their gap was only about .025. The gas tank was pretty full, so I added some sea foam to the tank and some stabile. I would like to take it our tomorrow jsut to see if it will actually accellerate. After that I will clean out the carbs and do what is needed there.
Also, I was going to empty it our and refill with new gas, but the gas did not smell of rotten egg (like the seloc book said it would), so thats why I left it in. What do you think, good, bad...

Well, I took it out yesterday, but the thing would not start. It does not seem that the carbs are getting any fuel. Where do I start, how can I even verify that there is gas being pushed to teh cars???

Re: Looking at a 96 SeaDo XP

If It were me I would remove all the old fuel and put it in a couple of gas cans, I would clean out the fuel tank and replace all the fuel lines, I would clean the fuel filter under the hood and totally bypass the selector switch for the fuel supply taking the fuel from the reserve pickup in the tank, I would use clear fuel lines and adjustable clamps rather than the factory clamps, I would also remove and rebuild both carbs, this is what I do with any used sea doo 2 stroke , and it usually solves any fuel issues, With clear fuel lines you can see what is going on in the fuel system . the original clamps usually leak and allow air to be sucked in, the selector switches usually get all gummed up or also allow air in the system, the carb internal filters are usually all black and gummed up and the fuel lines turn to goo and cause most of the garbage to get in the carbs in the first place, plus the diaphragms in the carbs go bad or get stuck on the covers.

Its most likely the fuel pump. If I recall the fuel pumps are attached to the carbs so you have to buy SBN carb kits. I think they run like $45 per carb. While you have them apart clean everything and blow out the ports. Also if it is oil injected get rid of that, as it will eventually go out and toast your motor without even knowing it. The 96 XP's are great machine.
