I am looking at this 18 foot 1995 Maxum 1800SR. He wants around $6000. but I think that we can get him down to 5500 it got life jakets, dual battery with control switch, stainless steel prop with extra and some other items. I look up the value and it says the it is worth a little below 5000 without the trailer, so I would think that it is worth around the 5500. It has a 4.3 liter v6 with mercruiser outdrive. What everbody opinions on the brand, engine and outdrive combo. The engine manifolds look good, one has a new gasket; but there is a little oil on the intake manifold between the valve covers, is that some what normal? Any one had a Maxum?

Re: Looking at a 1995 Maxum 1800SR, any experience?

I have a 2000 Maxum 1900SC (cuddy) w/ a 4.3L and I love it. I get to about 45mph. $6000 for a 1995 boat is a bit steep, I spent about $7500 for mine. The prices can vary from location, since I live between Lake Ontario and the finger lakes there are a lot of boats out there.

From what I see it looks very well taken care of (more pics could help). The ski-storage teak looks new or well kept. Sometimes paying a little premium to get a boat that is a little better taken care of is better is worth it in the long run. In any case a boat that age condition will be more important than brand.

Make sure you do a sea trial before you buy any boat. I would also check the bellows for cracking and tears, find out how new the tires, request any maintenance info/receipts on the boat before buying. Even ask how long ago the impeller was changed. If someone is asking a premium for a boat, then make sure it will be maintenance free for the next couple of years.

The 4.3L will be a Mercrusier w/ an Alpha One out drive. It is a very good power plant for a boat this size, which can also have the 3L Merc.

Thanks for the input, heres a few more pictures.

The boat is in Iowa and from what I can tell it has been well taken care of. The owner before this guy had it for quite a while and redid the ski cover like you mentioned. He also has all the manuals. I checked the oil and it looks fresh and clean. Good boat around here are hard to com by and this looks better than alot of the ones that I have seen.

One thing to note a Merc that old will be rated at 175hp, a newer one such as mine is of the same displacement is 190hp. That might be another bargaining chip.

It looks like it has the same windshield as mine and the lines look very similar. There looks like something is on the lower unit above the trim cylinders, what is that?

The SS props are a bit more $$ and they are more durable. One thing to note about SS is if you hit something your prop will be fine, but your lower unit might not be. Also the dual battery is an upgrade, though I would make sure both batteries are fine.

Does this boat come with a cockpit cover and a bow cover? It looks like he has been storing it indoors and you might not be able to. If you have to store it outdoor you will need a cover.

If the oil is clean he might have changed it last time he ran it, so it might not be an indicator if the block has been frozen.

No matter what, do a sea trial.

I owned a 2008 Maxum 1900SR3 with the 190hp, 4.3 and it was a great boat and served me well. I bought it new as a "left over" in 2009 and just traded it in late last year on current boat. Never let me down and had enough power to tube / ski behind. As with any brand, when buying used, it is more about upkeep, condition and maintenance then anything else. Agree with Hostage, make sure to sea trial it and do so with the number of people aboard you will normally have with you if possible. Good luck and I hope it works out for you!

I agree that from the pictures the boat looks to have been well maintained. Back in the day, Maxum was really a decent boat. I actually feel the price is a little high and that is from the point of view from MN where our boats tend to be really expensive because of the absolutly gigantic demand for them. Everyone has a sub 20 foot boat in their garage or cabin. My biggest issue with the boat is that it has the old technology, pre-vortec engine in. If it was one year newer, presumably it would have the vortec in it. 95 is right at the end of the pre-vortec and so I would be willing to pay a good bit less for it. I realize you will likely not be able to sea trial it but understand that running it on muffs in the driveway connected to a hose can mask big problems that would show up while actually being driven.

When we looked at the boat in person, I notice that it did say Vortec on the valve covers, is that a good thing? Are the Vortec engines a better engine?

If you do plan on buying it, don't offer anywhere near $6k. Offering $5500 leaves no room for negotiation.

Offer $4k and go from there. If the seller refuses(and doesn't come up with a reasonable counter-offer), be prepared to walk away.

Tons of boats for sale these days.

I have already talked price with him, I think that he is willing to take 5500. He "says" that he still owes $6100( if he did he got screwed IMO because he has had it for a while) I would be much more comfortable with 5000 but it seems that he is stuck in it( which isn't really my fault) I am prepared to walk away. he also said that I could talk with the previous owner which might be a goo thing too.

Has anyone ever look up the boat with the HIN, kinda like a carfax. What kind of information will it show?

Well if it says Vortec, I'm thinking you are good to go and my biggest issue with the boat is gone. The Vortec refers to the intake manifold improvements that allowed the engine to generate more power that came right about 1996. Presumably then your 1995 model year boat got a 1996 vortec engine on it or maybe had been replaced at some point. The reason I use all the presumably's is because of all the unknowns. Again as for price, we have many months to go until the boating season and so just given that, I feel it is overpriced, add on the age and I'd look for lower yet. There are goint to be tons of boats coming on the market in a few months time and the bad economy and high gas prices will again combine to give some really great deals on used boats so don't set yourself on just this model. Besides that many times used boats come with tons of expensive equipment like vests, ski's, inflators, wake boards etc that aren't even factored into the great price. I got literally thousands of dollars of nearly new equipment with my sig boat way back when I got it slightly used because so many owners just don't care any longer and give it away. That's one of the great bargains when buying used boats.

Nothing even remotely reliable exists.

I'm going to go back to.....if you're comfortable paying his price, then grab it. It's worth it for a nice boat. I will warn you that while usually correct, iboats forum members are CHEAP!!! :D

$5500 is good if it does not need any major stuff right away. A $4000 boat that needs bellows, ujoints, gimbal, etc can get to the $5500 mark in one afternoon of parts and labor.

I have a 1995 1800XR (outboard rather than I/O). Same color scheme, dash, everything. I've spent many a great day on the lake in mine.
