Using 8 pound test spiderwire EZ mono line, Hula Popper and a pflueger G7 trion reel.

Took a good ten minutes to reel her in, had the drag set to about 3lbs, she had a field day with it and took off.

Nice catch, Curly!!

Glad to see it isn't just we old timers that like the Hula Popper.

Congratulations. :)

Very nice, she is fat and ready for the spawn. I hope you didn't pull her off of her bed. not sure where they are at in the spawn in your area.

I threw her back after a quick revival. Hopefully there are much more like this one during the rest of the season!

NICE. I've been out 3 times and got skunked all 3 times-- of course I was with my 2 kds and they're a handfull with fishing. Still, I'm jealous. Nice job.

Nice, looks to be about a 5lber full of eggs so she's probably pushing 5.5. Don't worry, that big girl would just go right back to her bed. I can't remember the last time I threw a hula popper. I got one hanging on a retired lures rack with the hooks all rusted out.

Yep, it was 18inch and flirting with 5.5lbs on the scale. So the tournaments require more refined lures than a Hula popper? I find myself using it often! That and my jointed rapala.

If you like the hula popper you should try the rebel pop-r. Useless on weeds (like a hula popper) but deadly when the weeds and structure allow.

Trust me on this one!!

I wonder how different it works from the hula. Ill pick one up next chance I get. I usually get better results with the Hula Popper than the other lures.

Works just like a hula popper, just seems to draw more bites. The color shown in the picture works well for me. A hula popper works fairly well to. Since you already have the technique down the rebel will be no different. They do cast further however. Another reason I like them.

(ADD moment) The spell check on this computer (Ubuntu) flagged the word color. It suggests the British spelling colour.

The hula popper IMO, works great in un-pressured environment like ponds, isolated rivers and backwaters, etc with aggresive bass..I think it immitates an injured small bird more then anything else. Tournament waters are highly pressurized and a more subtle presentation works better.

Casting farther does sound excellent. I usually have trouble getting out over 30 feet.

I thought it was supposed to imitate a frog. And yep, that does make sense, it was in a small nook with a tiny stream feeding into the lake off of the main body.

It wasn't a fancy scale, one of those spring hanging scales. I can tell you it was over 5lbs and under 6lbs, so i estimated 5.5lbs:D

Yup... Hoola Poppers work pretty well for myself. I often use the ones which resemble frog patterns and make little pops with them. I've got better results doing small pluggs rather than larger ones.

Another killer bait are the tube baits.

tube_bait_1.jpg

I'll fish these on rock piles with weeds surrounding them. Cast out and do little pops off the bottom. When it feels like the line has gone snug, attempt to set the hook. Often its caught in some weeds, but others its a fish. There is no definitive "hit" like there is with other baits... but these are like crack with small mouths.

Water is usually 5-10 feet and I wear polarized glasses and often can see the fish swimming around and flick the bait right in front of their nose.

My 2 favorite colors are watermelon and camo. I think its because they resemble crayfish.

Polarized glasses. Brilliant, i tried them out with a pair i had, they work wonders. Definitely an addition to my tackle box.

Yup , not just for looking cool , polorized glasses and a hat with a brim to keep the glare off the back of the lenses will do wonders ! If I'm on shore arround here I have to use a floater (Hula/rap) to cut back on dredgeing weeds! I Also remove belly hook and rig circle hook instead of trebel on tail . Great fish Curly !! peter
