Re: Long time NOT running 62 evinrude ""help john""!!

I found a 10hp "gem" that had been in storage for 42 years - here's what I did to it so it would run well and reliably:

Replaced fuel pump, cleaned and rebuilt carb, replaced all fuel hoses, installed new water pump, disassembled & inspected gearcase (it was ok) and put it back together with all new seals, replaced several dried out gaskets along with a new thermostat, installed new points & condensers, and replaced the ignition coils and installed new plugs. All in all I did go a little overboard on it (I spent $250 in parts) and I tore it almost completely down (my choice), but it kept me occupied for 3 months worth of my spare time. It runs like a champ too! :D

You probably won't need to go as far as I did, but check the compression and check the ignition system first. Minimally I would do a fuel pump, water pump, carb rebuild and check the gear case for leaks and change the gear lube.

-John

Hi Mezman
Those little 5.5hp motors are great fishin motors on small boats. I can't hardly get any motor ready for service for less than $100. in parts. As John stated he did a cadillac job. If you follow his advice you should have a dependable fishin buddy for a long time. Pay close atten. to the ignition coils. Good luck have fun.

Let me know if you need any assistance in gettting tune up parts, manuals etc for this motor.. I agree these are Excellent motors, however my favorites are the old Evinrude Lightwins.. A little maintance now 100.00 in parts can make a darn nice investment.. Like I say if you need any help let me know, I have worked on these motors for about 10 year.. "gra6961@usa.net"

Re: Long time NOT running 62 evinrude ""help john""!!

A couple of years ago I caught dad throwing away a motor he bought second hand when I was 4 ( 33years ago ) Its a 1962 evinrude too. There was a good site describing a kit of parts and procedure to do install them try checking here http://www.maxrules.com/fixtuneitup.html
Our motor had lay in the basement for atleast 25 years.
There is some good advice on other posts regarding old motors.
The major problems I had were
High resistnce points needed to clean several times. Cracked insulation in coils, pathed with silastic until we knew motor would run. Carb took 3 attempts to get clean.
Runs well now but will buy a kit next time I,m in USA
