I'm going to use a long shaft 30 hp nissan on a boat made for a short shaft. The marine repair guy is going to build up the transom to acommodate this. Any problems that anyone can see here ? Has anyone done this with success. Or is it a bad idea and would a jack plate be better.

Don, what type of boat are we talking about here? Also how much is your marine guy charging to build up the transom?

This is an older boat. 1963 Sears Elgin speedboat which I have restored. Max hp 45. He's charging 75.00 per hour. Says it will take about 2 hours or so to do the job.

Re: long shaft

As long as he ties into the structural support of the existing transom, rather than just adding 5 inches to the top, you should be fine.
