Please excuse my ignorance. I am only a beginner.

I have just purchased for our Scouts a second-hand 13 foot aluminium tinny. I now need to buy an outboard motor.

How can I tell whether I need a long shaft or short shaft? Is it based on the distance from the top of the transom to the very bottom of the keel? Does anyone know of a website where all is explained?

Appreciate any help. Thanks,

David
dgolding@gtlaw.com.au
Sydney, Australia

Re: Long shaft or short shaft?

Hi David

Measure the distance from the edge where the motor will hang on the transom, to the bottom.

Legs generally come in 'short' and 'long' with 12,7 cm difference (5").

Do not ignore this although a long leg will work on boat designed for short, it will perform bad.
