Howdy, Leeips.

RDS-27 is a 1965 40hp. I don't think the S means short shaft because the RDS-27 is heavier than the RD-27. It may mean electric start.

Measure from the surface of the mounting clamp that sits on top of the transom to the AV plate. It needs to be 20" to fit your RIB.

Good luck. :)

thanks jb, can i just confirm that i need to measure from the top of the bracket, ie, where it rests on the top of the boat to the av plate? yikes i am a rookie, is that where the prop is, if so do i measure from the top or bottom of the plate i assume the top???

Re: long or short shaft?

1965 Johnson 40 hp model numbers:
RD-27 rope start, short shaft
RDL-27 rope start, long shaft
RDS-27 electric start, short shaft
RDSL-27 electric start, long shaft
RK-27 electric shift, short shaft
RKL-27 electric shift, long shaft

The weight difference between short/long shaft is approx 6 lbs.

That is what I think from what JB said about the weight. If I'm right about the model numbers you can't use the RDS-27 on your RIB. 15" shaft and 21" transom.

Edit:
http://www.brokeboats.com/shaftlength.html
That picture will help.

Re: long or short shaft?

I have a long shaft 40hp Evinrude which is basically the same engine as you have. I need a short shaft and you need a long shaft. If you are I would be willing to trade you driveshafts and shift shafts. It is very simple to convert to long shaft, all you do is change shafts and install an extension between the mid section and the lower unit which I will include. If you are interested email me at foxjohnc@comcast.net.
