long or short shaft

I have a 40hp evinrude Model E40TLCUD,I was told it was a long shaft .How do you measure the shaft .I was told it is a 87,SER.146509<br /> :confused:

Hi, Murray.<br /><br />Measure from the inside of the "hook" that goes over the transom to the anti-cavitation plate.<br /><br />15" is a short shaft, 20" is a long shaft. I believe that the "L" in your model number means it is a long shaft engine.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

In any case the anticavition plate (flat bit above the prop) should be level with the keel
