Ok, so a buddy of mine is looking at a boat he want to make a project out of. It's a 30' Oceanic open fisherman has an 8' beam. It does not have any motors on it.
Here is were it get's interesting. it does not come with a trailer. He cannot afford to buy one right now and I dont know of any place that rents trailers that big. He has a 25' trailer thats also set up for a deep v. Considering are no engines on the back, would it be possible to transport this boat with his trailer? Could weight be added to the front of the trailer to even it out?
I know I will probable hear alot of slack for this questions. Just curious as to what ya'll may think.

I wouldn't do it.
How far will it be towed?

If he doesn't have $ for a trailer, how long do you think it will be till he can repair and repower the boat? Just a thought.

He has money, he is just the "investor" type. He has alot tied up in investments at the time. He will have the money in a matter of time. But this boat came along and it's kind of his dream boat. He just wants to get it while it's available.
Also, I have heard people talk about renting long car haulers to transport boats. ????

I would say no way.

The two reasons are that the 25' trailer is set up for a 21' boat. Not only would the boat be off the back by 9' the weight of the 30' boat would be way too much for that trailer. The trailer is probably a 5000# trailer. That boat probably weighs in excess of 10,000#.

My opinion is that he should "invest" in a proper way of transporting it.

ok you didn't answer how far it had to be hauled. there are professional haulers, for boats that size. there are boat yards that rent space to do repair work, and will use their lift to help get the boat blocked up, you don't see many 30 footers being towed. next question what's he going to use as a tow vehicle. unless you go to a commercial vehicle, nothing is rated for it.

The trailer is'nt 25', It has a 25' boat on it. This boat in general is a light boat for it's lenght, plus it has no engines on the back. I put a link below to a very simuliar boat to the one my friend wants, just 32' insted of 30'. Even that one is on a two axle trailer.
I belive the boat is someware between houston and galveston, and it would be going to San Antonio(130-160mi). Just try and remember that we are some stuburn Texan rednecks that will try and figure out a way to do just about anything. Not saying that in the end we will end up doin it. I just wanted to throw the idea out here and see what you guys thought.

If you don't maintain a decent ratio of tongue weigh, you create one of the most dangerous towing situations. Texas is known for wind across the highways and it doesn't take much to start a trailer swaying if you don't have proper tongue weight.

Re: Long boat, not so long trailer???

that 32 is a nice looking boat. if the 30 is in anywhere near the same shape i wouldn't even think about the short trailer.

with the 5 or 6 feet of hull hanging off the back, you'll have the ends of the bunks effectively digging into the hull. add some downforce winds, bumps in the road...nothing i'd want to do to my hull.

the plan is pound foolish, penny wise or something like that. risking alot to save a little.

I wasn't implying that your friend was poor, could be worth millions for all I know.
But the question goes to having the funds available for use.
If he is not willing to commit the $ for a trailer or commercial transport and storage, then he is not committed to the project.

Tell him to free up the money or take out a loan, and do it right.

Certainly there are professional boat movers in the area.
Hire them to hoist it, move it, and set it on jacks.

the Texas redneck way--- get a hay trailer, set the boat on it block it up with a couple of bails, lasso the bow and stearn. pull it home with 2 oxen. just a little fun, you mentioned redneck Texan.

Or forego the trailer and just put the hull on skids...

Ahhh...Perfect, Why didnt I think of that before? However, I think that I will use four Oxen considering the boat is 30'. And I think a couple of good, straight telephone poles will work good as skids...lol...
The Texan redneck way just means we use what we have available and usualy get it done without any problems. However, were not going to be stupid and do something unsafe(well, something thats unsafe to others). Thanks for all the feedback guys. I think it's safe to say that he probable will not end up trying it.

Why not just move the axle as far back as possible and make longer bunk boards? The bunks could still be strong by attaching a peice of steel angle to the bottom.
