What is the difference between a long and short shaft in the lower unit? Are they speaking about the drive shaft or the prop shaft? What is the most likely length for a 1973 850 Merc? Thanks....
Ben

Sorry....You have a very good point to the question at hand by Stinger1. I totally understand that every question that is posted here is only something that someone has asked a million times before...it can easily be disturbing. I guess I was only looking for the easy way out....wrong....I really should look around...but I really do appreciate this site...and once again I thank you.
Ben

Re: Long and Short Shafts

It is a basic thing. Short shaft means the transom on the boat is 15" high, long shaft the transom is 20" high, extra long shaft is 25" high, double extra long is 30" high . In all cases there is the same amount of lower unit and prop below the hull. A most confusing thing made simple.
