Hey everyone, does anybody have an 18ft Lonestar El Dorado and can provide the steering cable length? I'm restoring one from 1960 and it has no steering cable to get the numbers off. I plan to run it along the gunwales. Thanks!

Ayuh,..... Usually, there are diagrams on steerin' cable pages that explain how to measure for a new cable,......

I can tell you from experience, that usin' the length from a sister hull can bite ya in the butt,.....

Back in that day it was much more common to find the cable / pulley steering systems and not single cable setups. As Bondo said, look on steering cable pages and get how to measure

When I picked up the boat it had the cable/pulley system but I removed it. I'm going to measure it anyways once the engine is installed but wanted to go ahead and get an idea if anyone on the forum has the same boat. I saw one on youtube with a steering cable that looked really clean but he hasn't responded to my comment unfortunately. I would route it the same exact way and it should be the same footage.

Ayuh,..... As I said, don't count on that,......

I did that once, 'n the new cable was to short,.....
2 of the same boats, 1 year apart,....

I'm not gonna steer you wrong 😃 with the measurement calculations I did years ago on a 57 LoneStar Runabout but here is what I looked up and got from Teleflex, they were the outfit I bought said cable and helm 30 years ago (sadly, that boat was sold long ago)

New Installation: Measure cable routing path from wheel center line to engine connection, as follows: A = Center line of wheel to gunwale (or deck, if routed downward), B = Dash to transom, C = Gunwale to centerline of cable connection at centered tiller.

For Cable Installations through the Engine Tilt Tube: Add A, B & C + 6″, then round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

For Cables Mounted to Transom, Splashwell or Stringer: Add A, B & C, then subtract 6″ and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

TYPICAL SINGLE STATION ROUTING
