Loctite AV alternative for impeller replacement?

I?m preparing to replace the impeller on my 1965 Mercruiser 110 HP with IA E-Z Shift stern drive.

According to the manual, I should have a ?water pump impeller drive pin?, which apparently connects the impeller to the drive shaft. When I disassembled my water pump, this pin was missing, and my old warn out impeller could easily be spun without turning the drive shaft.

So I tracked down a replacement pin, and impeller, and both are on order. My next challenge will be assembling everything. The manual says: A new impeller drive pin should be bonded to replacement drive shaft with Type ?AV? Loctite (C-92-58295A1).

I?m having a hard time locating Loctite AV, and it looks like a very small bottle is running almost $50 online.

Is there an alternative I can use for Locitite AV? Is this the same as Locitite Aviation? Will Loctite red work?

Thank you very much in advance if you can help!

I just use waterproof bearing grease to hold it in place till the impeller is installed.
Most OEM kits include a new keyway for the impeller

Yes, I'm referring to #34 (pin, impeller drive).

So you're saying I can simply use waterproof bearing grease to hold the pin in place, then slide the impeller onto it, and everything will be good to go? Attached is the section from the manual that mentions repetitively to use Loctite AV for step 3.

FYI, this is the kit I bought for the impeller:

It doesn't come with a pin, and I couldn't find one on iboats.com, so I purchased that from some guy on eBay.

Re: Loctite AV alternative for impeller replacement?

I was reading through the manual one more time, and noticed that the section covering the water pump reassembly continues to another page (see attached).

On this page it states: ?NOTE: If Loctite is used in Step 3, above, allow gear housing to remain in horizontal position at room temperature or warmer (not to exceed 120 F) for 12 hours for Loctite to set. Gear housing assembly then can be reinstalled.?

This would indicate that the pin and impeller should be thoroughly bonded to the drive shaft? but this of course could be unnecessary if real world experience indicates otherwise.

So should I spend $50 and get some Loctite AV, is there an alternative to Loctite AV, or should I just reassemble with waterproof bearing grease?

Thanks again for your input!

You just need the grease. All you are trying to do is keep the pin straight up and down till you get the impeller on it. After the impeller is on and you turn it both directions to make sure it there, whatever you use isn't needed anymore.
Don't forget, those are OLD manuals.

I assembled my water pump this weekend, using only waterproof bearing grease to hold the impeller drive pin to the drive shaft until I slid the impeller on it, and everything is working great.

Thank you very much Bt Doctur, Alpheus, and Don S for your time and advice!
