Ok..I'm looking at buying an 86 IMP 230SC. FWC. Merc 260/v8 I/O. It's engine is locked up. don't know why yet. It has been sitting for a couple yrs. I can buy it for $1200. I'm wondering if I should try to rebuild this engine or buy a new short/long block...looking for some educated advice..thanks

Re: locked up

This boat in good running condition is worth maybe $ 2500 ?
If a saltwater boat subtract $1000
New base engine - $ 2800
Manifolds & risers 600
Cost of boat - 1200
Total $ 4600

Is outdrive any good - wiring - trim & tilt - pumps - upholstery, transom rotted - Labor 25 - 100 hours ?

What will they pay you to haul away ?

Re: locked up

I'm a mechanic and not into boat sales. If you are talking a 23 FT boat for $1200,it sounds good.Cosmeticallt how does the boat look?Good upholstery? Not cheap to have done.Fiberglass dull
I imagine.Cracks and chips?Won't look good until repaired,not cheap.
Motor locked up probably why it's been sitting two years.Sitting shouldn't have locked it up.
Figure $3000.00 for a good engine, and install it yourself,or pay someone.
Next you have to address the outdrive. Is it good?If not rebuilds are too expensive,so aftermarket drive is $1500 plus.
Above all this you have gimble bearings, ujoint bellows, shift cables and electrical parts to consider.
Not trying to scare you,but trying to indicate what you are getting into.
Find a boat that at least functions well in the water would be my advice.
DHP

Re: locked up

The marina told me the outdrive looks good..I guess they checked the oil and whatever they could without the engine running. It is a 23 foot boat. Fresh water it's whole life. It needs some upholstery work...restiching..etc. Wiring for lights needs work. The hull is good. The prop is good. Fiberglass is a little dulled. I'm hoping I can rebuild this engine. If not maybe a long/short block...

How much would you give for an 86 car
with a locked up engine. The owner
did not repair boat for a good reason.
It was impractical - cost wise.
Run-run-run.

Re: locked up

Tell them you will take it off their hands and not charge them anything for taking it away.

Re: locked up

Unless it was a labor of love or something that would be worth more then what you have into it, don't do it. Because you start off cheep will not mean it will stay that way. I'm one to talk. I have about 10 grand into my $800.00 boat (labor of love).
