Re: lock down for reverse
On the manual tilt models of the MFS9.8A3, the reverse lock disengages in forward, and engages in reverse. That allows tilt. It's also why you shift to F before tilting by hand. If you have a heavy boat, and run over a log at slow speeds in F, the motor will probably tilt on impact, while the inertia of the boat causes it to ride over the log. YMMV. You can still get a lot of damage. Keep in mind that the thrust of the prop (on any outboard) is constantly pushing the lower unit forward when you are in F.
