Re: Location of recirculation check valves

First remove the powerhead...
just kiddin.;)

They are made from brass, they look like little 90 degree grease fittings.
They are more easily seen on the side opposite the starter.
3 on each side.
They have a 1/4" black hose that goes to opposite cylinders, valve #1 goes to #3 cylinder or something like that, so they criss cross each other.

On the start side you probably have to remove the starter to get access.
Get the freakin manual.:p

Well worth the price.

Re: Location of recirculation check valves

I do have books but the location and pictures are not clear. I see brass fittings with the hoses on them are they the external check valves? I see a picture in my books for internal check valves but dont see them. I assume there is one internal and one external for each cylinder.

Thanks
Tim

yes those are the recirc check valves, clean out with carb cleaner spray, should only work in one direction.

Methinks you have a seloc or other afermkt manual, get the genuine factory service book, you'll throw the other books away. Trust me, my manual covers your engine and its clear as a bell.

^^^^
Yep....exactly. It will even give a full page picture of the recirc valve hose routing.

Re: Location of recirculation check valves

jonesg, are you sure about that? I am looking at the factory service manual for my 94 175 Ocean Runner and I am pretty sure that those brass fittings are only hose fittings. The manual says that you have to remove the carburetors and intake manifold to get at the check valves. There are two per cylinder and the picture shows a pair of needle nose pliers on one of them and it is definitely under the intake manifold.

Re: Location of recirculation check valves

Thanks guys I see the plot thickens the valves maybe buried. My engine is a 175 ocean runner J175EXEDB and Ill be dammed if I find them. I see the brass fittings that the 1/4 " hoses are hooked up to. What manual do you guys have for the motor I have three different ones

OMC Technical Service final edition parts manual
Clymer Outboard Shop manual
Johnson Manual on pdf the I got off ebay that seems complete covers 1992 2001 but the pictures are not very clear because it was scanned.
What manual do you guys recommend and where can you get an original shop manual?

Thanks
Tim

Re: Location of recirculation check valves

OK...on a 1996 200 looper, (not the same motor), I have the recirc valves as described. My OMC service manual completely describes them.
On the side of the block, a small fitting resembling the "small grease fitting" as described by jonesg above, and if you put a hose on it, and either blow or suck, it will only pass air ONE way.
Then, inside the intake, behind the carbs, there is a one way valve that is pressed into the intake. It is about 1/2 inch in diameter, and has a screen covering it. That too is a one way valve.

Maybe you have the same such parts?

Re: Location of recirculation check valves

pak-ratt, the links that jonesg mentioned are your best bet for a factory manual. I ordered my OMC manual when I purchased my boat and motor in 94. The part number on it is 500611, it is the service manual for the 150, 150C, and 175 motors for that year. On page 2-40 there is a procedure for checking the recirculation system. With the engine running at idle, remove the recirc. hoses from the block fittings one at a time and submerge the end of the hose in a cup of water. If bubbles appear your check valves are okay. If no bubbles appear you need to remove the intake manifold to gain access to the two check valves and they are both under the manifold. The only check for the block fittings is to see if you can use a syringe to force alcohol thru the fitting. It doesn't mention trying to suck back thru the fitting.
