I have a 1997 4.3GL Volvo Penta SX and am looking to replace the impeller. I have the SELOC manual, but I can't figure out the exact location of the impeller (fairly embarrassing). Any directions or pictures on where the impeller is located?

It's inside the raw water pump!

I won't even tell you where it's at, and if that Seloc won't tell you, then maybe you should get rid of it and get the real OEM manuals.
Now., follow the water hose from the drive to the engine. You will find the pump.

Randyo, it should be in a pump housing mounted on the front of your engine, driven by one of your drive belts.

Bummer. The manual did point out that it would be in the water pump and that the water pump would be in front. But I guess I was under the assumption that it would be an "easy" job. I wasnt expecting to take any belts off. Is it easy to put the belts back on?

The manual suggested that I could replace the impeller w/o having to remove any of the belts, but by the looks of it that wasnt possible. BTW, thanks for your quick replies in the middle of winter! Those of us in San Diego are still enjoying great weather!

You assumed something would be easy on a boat? ? ? ?
You're new at this right?

I have a boat in the shop right now that I am replacing an impeller on. It requires pulling the engine to get the pump off. (Mercruiser)
All you have to do is pull the pump on your Volvo, 2 hoses and 2 bolts mounting the pump onto the engine.

Re: Location of impeller on volvo

I figured if its something that should be done once a year, they manufacturers would go out of their way to make it easy...I'm obviously wrong. I've definitely identified the pump and have access to it in order to take it off. My only concern is getting the belt back on there properly (and tight). I'll be sure to post pictures when I screw things up 8)

How can I find out which one of these kits I need?

and does it include all of the gaskets for putting the pump back on as well or do I need to purchase that separately?

From that link, I have no idea how you would tell. That is the most confusing thing I have looked at lately
If you have your engine serial number handy, or the FULL model number, then I can get you the number for the proper Volvo kit. You can cross from that (If you want)

Engine Model (from serial No. plate): 4.3GL PLKD
Engine Serial No. (from serial No. plate): 4110147252

You need Volvo impeller kit #3862281. It comes with gaskets for several pumps (including yours) and a pack of glycerin to prelube the impeller with.

PS: Might want to change the model in your signature to 4.3GL PLKD, it would sure save a lot of problems. The LK is the actual year model designation. Odd letters were a holdover of the old OMC days during the OMC/Volvo joint venture.

Actually Volvo puts the pump pretty much where it has to on your GM engine.Mercruiser does the same. But they both know they have to keep engine width and height to a minimum for marine use.

Then the boat manufacturer does pretty much what he wants putting his boat around the drive package. No concern as to service access is given on probably 90% of boats. They are selling looks and accessories.

DHP

and few new owners think about how far down in the bilge the oil fiter is,never mind the seawater pump.
