Loading a mini cartridge grease gun??

Hello all- (I tried to post earlier and it may not have posted....if it did sorry for duplicate)

Just finished a complete bearing job on the boat trailer and installed set of bearing buddies. Liked the fact that they have a grease zerk fitting for outside lub. application.

Problem- don't laugh please :$ : I Purchased a small trigger type grease gun that uses 3 oz tubes. Both top and bottom of the gun come off, and the bottom feed rod has a notch to hold the spring loaded push rod completely out. I presume I remove one end or the other, pull and hold the push rod out...but now HOW DO I INSTALL the cartridge....

The cartridge has a plastic removable top on one end and a foil cover on the other. How does it go in and what end do I remove or not??

Thx

Sam

Pull the rod out and lock it held completely out. Unscrew the other end of the gun tube, not the end the rod is coming out of. Take the plastic cap off of the grease tube and put it in the gun, that end first. Push it down until it stops. You'll notice a slight lip on the foil end. Remove the foil and screw the top of the gun back on. Release the rod from the locked position. Bleed the air out if it has that feature, if not, trigger pull until you get grease.

PS. On the little ones, the real fun is getting the empty tubes back out...

Amen on getting the old one out. Molydisulfide grease permeates skin and makes a mess. I'd suggest rubber gloves.

Just a thought -- I hope you packed the bearings before installing the "Buddies". These are not packing tools.

Excellent point made here, you need as much grease in there to start with as possible.

Just to add, if there is a small screw on the top by the nozzel on the body of the pump, take it out and Burp the gun until grease comes out the nozzel then replace the screw and go.

Yes, I did Silvertip...changed races, seals, bearings, packed inner hub well and then after install of bearing buddies filled up grease compartment on them.

Als, found that an excellent wedge to put new races in was the - 1 7/8 - hitch ball. Covered the race with a cloth, and since only the outer diameter of the ball makes contact with the slanted inner face of the race, no damage and since equal force is applied to the race it slid in evenly and without fuss.

Thx to all.
