I need help. I just bought a 1986 four winns liberator 211 yesterday with a tandem axle galvanized roller bunk trailer. The axle with brakes broke in half so I worked out with the owner that i could keep it at the storage place for two weeks so i can replace the axle.

Here's my dilemma,

Previous owner has three jobs and he won't have the time to take a look at it for me and lives 45 mins away from the boat. I live two hours away from the boat and don't have the time to look at the axle. Stupid me measured the axle but I didn't look to see if the axle was straight or dropped. The trailer doesn't have title so I don't have a model number or anything like that.

Does anyone know if a 86 load rite trailer axle is straight or drops? I know that it didn't dip in the middle. I feel like it was a common trailer for the time.

Thank you for all your help and trying to save 4 hrs of driving.

:welcome: to iboats

Where did the axle break? Can you get a piece of steel to put the axle back together to allow it to be moved on to another trailer?

Maybe rent or find a car trailer and secure the boat trailer on the car trailer

Re: Load Rite question

The axle broke about half an inch away from the hub, it's too close to weld. If possible I would just like to replace the one broken axle and trailer it home. The second axle is intact but I'm afraid if the one broke the other will.

Re: Load Rite question

Depends on the load rating of the axle. All loadrite #3500 axles are drop axles

Fwiw: my back axle rusted out after 9 years of use. The front still looks like new. Saltwater .....front axle rarely gets wet

Hire a roll back wrecker to haul it home... Then launch the boat in the yard n go to town on the trailer

Hope you have a registration for that trailer, if not, you will need a trailer inspector to give it the ok before you can register it. at least here (PA)

Ayuh,.... That IS the Weldment point,... it would have to be taken apart to reweld it,...

I like Smoke's idea,...

Have it loaded on a flatdeck, 'n hauled to yer place for ya,...

The "Why" it broke is a rather important question at this point,....

Re: Load Rite question

A rollback would be real costly for a 2 hour each way round trip. Find or rent a trailer to put it on would be a lot cheaper if it would fit, don't know how long the boat is with trailer. Find another boat trailer to put the boat on and bring home then go back and get the half broke trailer. Only other way is to see if you could rent a set of wrecker dollies, but getting them on the broke axle may still take some engineering.

Going to be hard to fit a boat trailer for a boat that size onto anything but a deck over trailer and that would be a little scary to try to load with a busted axle.

Re: Load Rite question

I think I would rather just replace the one axle and get the boat home, it shouldn't be too bad to replace, the back axle is still there so I have jack stands in place already :) If I had to guess why it broke I would say that the brake seized up or the hub did and the axle was so rotted it broke. The only reason I say that is because how the axle looks.

If that is the reason you may break the other on the way home

Re: Load Rite question

Take a look at their parts catalog on the website it is very complete and you can look up the axle specs. I agree with the concern about the other axle, not only that, if there was that much corrosion, getting the old axle ubolts off will be a real struggle not fun, and what about the springs? You might need a cut off wheel, or a torch. I was able to get all the old stuff unbolted on mine but it was a struggle and that was in the warmer weather, if you are in a cold region I can't imagine what a pain that would be to do now. About the title, in NY trailers are not titled but you need the registration to transfer ownership. You better get that worked out first or you won't be able to register it to get it back home.

A 4" grinder with a cut off wheel will cut thru those bolts like butter. Took me less than 1 minute per side. It took me longer to move from one side to the other.
