livewell timer wiring question

I'm replacing livewell on-off switch with Rig-Rite timer switch. Existing switch has only 2 posts for wire. Timer has 3, one for ground. Do I just ignore the 3rd post on the timer or ground it to the boat?? I'll probably leave the existing switch where it is since the timer will not fit in it's mounting hole. Maybe run wires from the existing switch thru the timer and on to the fuse?? But what to do with the ground??

Ayuh,... Ground has to run back to the battery...
The other 2 wires are power in,+ power out...

your old switch was just that, power in and power out when turned on. you new timer will need a ground to run timer, which now controls livewell pump, you should have a bus ground, if not it need to be conected to same battery as positive came from.

Re: livewell timer wiring question

You don't need the original switch since the Rig Right timer has an off position. It also has a RUN (or FILL) setting. You turn the switch to RUN/FILL to allow the pump to fill the livewell. You then set the switch to AUTO and the livewell pump will run for a specified amount of time and then turn off for a specific amount of time. The timer is an electronic device. For it to work it requires 12 volts IN and ground. The third wire is the feed to the livewell pump. Ground is wherever you find it which is either at the helm or at the battery.
