Live Well Operation. Help

Bought Boat couple of days ago. !984 Astro Glass. Live well in back bait well in front. My aerator switch has auto, off, and manual. I have a hole in bottom and top of wells. When I filled the front well with water from garden hose it flowed right back out of hole in transom on the left, when I filled the back well water came out the right side hole. before I put in lake I would like to know exactly how it operates and when do I need to turn on switch. the aerator does come on when I turn the switch Thanks for any help

Their should be a plug in stand pipe that fits in the drain hole when its filling it becomes the over flow and when you pull it out it drains the tanks.
