2003 175 Looper.
On way in when I got to my no wake zone, my over heat alarm went off.
Turned around and steam coming out of pee whole.
limped for 30 seconds at 1500 rpm to get out of chanel, shut her down and thru anchor.

As I was lifting up engine, I saw a plastic bag floating away by transom (but did not see come off of LU.

Waited for a minute or 2, turned key to see if alarm came back on. As soon as it fired up, the alarm was back.

Shut off immediately (was on for 5sec), took cover off and let sit for 10mn.

Felt cool enough to try again, so fired her up, no alarm and pee stream looked fine.

Put cover back on, made it back to dock.

Took boat out again and ran for a good 40mn or so @ 4000-4500rpm (after no wake zone) and engine appeard to be fine.
No alarm, no missing, crusie speed is where she is supposed to be at 4200 rpm with amount of tab used for water conditions and weight I had in boat.

Water pump and T-stats were replaced June of 2008.

Most likely, it was the bag that caused the overheat.

Could I have done any perm. damage?

She certainly ran fine when I took her back out.

Pee stream strong and flushed her before I went home.

You will want to check the plugs for signs of water intrusion. Good shop practice is to replace the head gaskets, but you should at least re-torque the cylinder head bolts.

BTW, I don't know if you have head gaskets or o-rings.
