Hi,
I'm struggling to get my head around the relationship between timing and link & sync on an Evinrude 1989 20HP E20ELCEM.
I don't have an OEM manual, trying to get by with a SELOC, but while the link and sync bit makes sense there's very little in way of explanation around setting timing / spark advance -- whether it needs doing, how and when to do it, etc.
Here's where I struggle. Early in the manual, when describing the different types of ignition system covered, it states:
"Breaker points are NOT used in the magneto capacitor discharge (CD) ignition systems."
Then later, when it's talking about synchronisation (link & sync) for the type II CD system with sensor coils it says:
"Timing is NOT adjustable with a flywheel CD magneto system. The timing is controlled by the point setting."
But didn't they already say that there ARE no points...?
My head hurts.
What else do I need to do re. timing apart from the link & sync?
Another part of the manual mentions using a timing light to set the spark advance via a spark advance screw, but it doesn't explain where to find said screw, or give enough details on the procedure for doing it.
Any pointers / advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Calvin!
