I have a low idle and slow speed issues with my motor. I was told to follow Joe Reeves WOT timing procedure. I am a rookie, does this procedure work on older motors such as mine. My motor runs fine at anything above slow speeds. I followed the procedure, with all spark plugs removed (do they need to be connected to plug wires and grounded to engine block?), throttle at full, spark tester set and timing light hooked up, but engine doesn't crank. What am I missing? (besides experience).

With the engine in gear, the safety switch is engaged which prevents the key from engaging the starter solenoid.

Crank the engine by using a jumper wire from the battery cable terminal of the starter solenoid to the 3/8" nut terminal on the solenoid that causes the solenoid to engage.

Unless you have tinkered with the timing... loosening the locknut and moving the full spark advance stop screw & bumper from its original position, the timing hasn't changed.

Start with the basic trouble shooting.... what are the compression readings of all cyinders? With the s/plugs removed, do you have spark on all cylinders that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!?

If you have proper spark and compressison, the usual idle problem (you don't say exactly what it is) is due to fouled carburetors.

Spark plugs should be Campion QL77JC4 plugs gapped at either .040 or .030, whichever works best for you.
