I think this is another one of these regional named fish. perhaps you could also include the region. In texas I believe this is also a same name as Cobia and other names am I right here.

Spudly
Well I know you are not in central California as season does not open until July 1.

Best way to fish for Lingcod is with a large live bait and fish all the reef or rocky areas as deep as you can go. If you can not use live bait then use hex bar jigs. You need at least 50LB test line if you do not want to take a chance on loseing the big fish. Dead bait next choice, sardines, jack smelt, anchovies. Use a big hook even a small under size ling could take a 12/0 hook.

When bring up always check ling early as many times they will just grab bait and hang on to bait but not be hooked. Usually will not let go if do not pull out of water so you can net. Of-course you know they have large sharp teeth so take some pliers to remove hooks. Dont take more than you can use.
Have lots of fun.

Re: ling cod

Sorry folks, it dawned on me today as I was relaxing waiting for the fish to bite that there are the two types of ling cod. I have never had the oppertunity to fish salt water so I forget what is out there. Anywho, I am from Armstrong B.C. and will be fishing for fresh water ling in Mabel Lake. I also fish Adams Lake lots which I have heard has ling also. Thanks you folks for your replys

Burbot A. These fish are usually found on the
bottom. They can be found shallow 3 to 4 ft or
deep. Usually I find them in water at least 20ft
or more. They are scavengers, but will take jigs
tipped with minnows, and worms and the like. They
are attracted to sound as well, so a small rattle
on your jig can help. And they like to feed at
night after dark. Guluk!

Re: ling cod

In Oregon off shore waters we fish the inner reefs and use bait or jigs, live kelp greenling(sea trout) work great for bait as it is a natural bait. (under 6") in Oregon we can catch them when ever they are in to spawn but only 24" or larger are keepers.

Re: ling cod

Do fresh water lings have a blue color to them like ocean lings? How big do they get?

Re: ling cod

We catch them in Ensenada off the bottom on live anchovies or sardines, and sometimes off cut pieces of squid or fish. They are absolutely delicious! And don't be afraid of the blue fillets - they turn nice and white when you cook them. Try some lingcod tacos!!
