I have a 1983 Yamaha Mariner with a bad lighting coil. When the new coil arrived, it has 2 long green wires as apposed to a short orange wire and a short gray wire. Des it matter which wire goes to which set of points?

I've got an '82. My manual shows both leads from the lighting coil as GREEN. Based on that and the schematic,

Based on the schematic for the magneto ignition system, the grey and orange wires come from the primary ignition coil.

OK, reading your post again, I think there's some confusion (either on your part or mine :) ). If you have a coil with two green leads, you have a lighting coil - that doesn't have any connection to the points.

A coil with an orange and grey wire is the primary ignition coil. The grey wire comes from the points for the No. 1 cylinder and connects to the secondary ignition coil for the No. 1 cylinder. Similarly, the orange wire is associated with the No. 2 cylinder.

I doubt if a lighting coil will function as a primary ignition coil.
