I am in the process of removing my 150 from my boat.. My question is I have lifting eyes attached to the powerhead. I have one on the starboard but I have two on the port side of engine. The one attached to the powerhead on the port side is set lower then the one on starboard side. But I have another eye near the starter that seems to be the same height.. Are these the correct lift points to remove motor? And which ones do I use if so? If not, where do I lift from? I attached pics, I think..

You run the risk of those breaking and dropping the engine. Pull the cover off the flywheel and the plastic cap (if you have one) in the center of the flywheel. The inside of the flywheel should be threaded. There is a tool you can buy or build if you have the right thread size pipe that threads into the flywheel and has a lifting eye on it. Looks like a short nipple with an eye welded to one end.

Re: Lifting eyes on 1991 150 johnson

My thinking is that the factory put those lifting eyes on the block for a reason. I recently installed a '93 175 on my boat, I have the factory service manual and it says to use the eyes.

In my case I didn't have a chain or hooks that would fit the lifting eyes, so opted to use some rope that I had on hand. I wrapped the eyes with electrical tape where the rope would be making contact as insurance against the rope chaffing. The rope I had was rated at over 600 pounds, and I used 2 loops of rope so that the weight of the engine was distributed amongst 4 lengths of rope. Seeing as how this engine weighs around 375 pounds I think that's a very ample safety factor. I used the eye near the starter and the eye on the starboard side, with those 2 lift points the engine was very stable and easy to maneuver with the hoist.

The factory lifting eyes will work fine.

Agree + 1......Used them many times. Beats taking all the stuff off the top of the flywheel.
