Aloha! I have a boat that I need to get off a trailer due to extensive rust damage to the frame of trailer. The problem is that the trailer is so rusted that it will probably fall apart if I take it anywhere.I'm in the process of making a boat cradle/dolly to hold the boat while I rebuild/replace rusted parts on the trailer but I don't know how to lift the boat off the trailer. I don't have a garage and no lifting devices to speak of except a automobile jack. The boat is a 15' Whaler so its not that big or heavy but I can't figure out how to move it. Help! Thanks for any info/help, Shinchan

Re: Lifting boat off trailer

I've taken several boats off trailers using a floor jack and a bunch of boards, and even old tires. You might be able to do it using an auto jack depending what the jack is. You need to jack up the back of the boat and clear the trailer and then get blocks and boards under the transom on both sides. Support the stern well and then start easing the trailer out from under her. You will need to support the boat in the center on the keel after you pull the trailer out a bit. And then support the hull again where ever needed, you really can't use too much support. Being a 15 footer it should not be to hard to do though using the appropriate jack is a big help. Use a little ingenuity and it should be fairly easy to do.

Aloha, Shinchan.

I use the method Mako describes.

One thing he didn't mention is that I tie the stern to a tree with a long rope, then ease the trailer foreward a foot or two to start the boat off of the trailer.

Then I jack up the stern a few inches and put a support under it.

Ease the trailer a few feet more and add more support, including the chines.

Repeat this until the boat is off.

To reload it to the repaired trailer, just crank it onto the trailer by letting the trailer be pulled under the still tied boat by the loading winch.

Good luck. :)

1] Pull boat under big oak tree.
2] Run heavy strap underneath boat in front.
3] Run heavy strap underneath boat in rear.
4] Use come-along to raise boat off trailer.
5] Walaa, boat off trailer.

Just joking ofcourse :D But it would work as long as the boat was not to heavy.

Or you can use a jack to lift the stern just a little, then put blocks under each stern corner. Now use the tongue jack to raise the tongue for blocks, or use the rope/tree/come-along to lift by the bow and bow hook. Just watch your poop deck...all boats are heavy enough to crush your barnacles.
