My 1989 70 has what looks like a lifting ring bolted to the crankcase aft of the flywheel. However, the manual talks about using a lift rig that bolts to the flywheel - said rig comes at a price, of course, so I would prefer to use the existing ring if it is adequate. I am concerned that the existing ring might be only for lifting the powerhead, as it does not look too robust.

Your experience appreciated...

if it is a loop bolted to the top of the block it is fine.

If you're lifting the whole motor that loop is fine. If you're trying to lift the powerhead only, use the ring that bolts to the flywheel to prevent crankshaft damage.

I just lifted a similar engine using the ring that is on the block,, no problems at all. I did move the wire harness that was cable tied to it to avoid damaging the wires.

Dhadley hit it on the head as usual. If you notice where that lifting lug is located the engine will not be balanced and the top of the engine will tilt forward toward the boat when you lift it. If you are removing the entire engine from the boat this will not be any problem.

Just turn the lifting ring around. That balances it a bit better.

Thanks - the loop definitely seemed off center, so I may try turning it around. I appreciate everyone's advice!

If you turn the loop around, make sure of two things, first be sure that the loop isn't bent or don't get bent and rub the flywheel, and second, make sure that the hook of what ever you use don't catch under the flywheel now that the loop is moved.
