My 96 3.0 LX was stoted for two years when I started it was missing and making real bad top end noise. I removed the valve cover to find the front two push rods far from the rocker arms (about a 3/8in )all of the others clearance were ok. I ran the engine the front two were not opening the valves at all. I tightend the rockers down the 3/8in and the miss and noise stopped, but there is no oil being pumped up the push rods. Could both of the lifters have leaked down and be stuck down

Re: lifters leaked down ?

Welcome to iboats, :) I would think they could. I would pull out the offenders, and see whats up. Disassemble if you need to......If they come unstuck you will be smacking the tops of your pistons & then you will get a different noise.....How was the oil pressure? You should see oil getting pumped up there......JK

The oil pressure was at about 40psi. I had to order the lifters, I've recived them but have not had time to put them in,maybe this weekend.

Unless you have a new or reground cam to install as well you will destroy your new lifters and cam in very quick time.
You can't replace lifters only on a worn camshaft.
Do as J.kopec suggests but note where each lifter comes from and don't mix up the components if you dismantle any.
Reassemble back to ORIGINAL position unless you have obvious damage to the lower face.

peter, I thought it was not used lifters with new cam. I understood you could replace a lifter & not ruin an "old" cam. Anyone???

Just replaced cam and lifters in a friends truck because he put new lifters on an old cam. Lasted about 5000 miles.

Re: lifters leaked down ?

read tech articles at cranecams or compcams or other valvetrain maker.

For non roller lifters, you cannot reuse old lifters with a new cam. If you get a new cam, you need new lifters.

You can always replace lifters whenever, however you need to properly install them and break them in.

If there was 3/8" (0.375") slack between the pushrod end and rocker, then that leads me to believe the rocker was adjusted before it was stored. I don't think a collapsed lifter drops that far, more like 0.060" when it collapses. Or you have bent pushrods. Who maintains the boat, and what was done prior to storage?

It's your money, gamble if you want to. If you have enough time to do it twice you have enough time to do it right.

Re: lifters leaked down ?

I'm not going to enter any argument here. I've seen some instances where new lifters were placed onto an old cam and 'POOF' the're gone.
It all depends on the condition of the faces and that is open for many interpretations.
My opinion only.
Good luck either way.
