being a fresh water person, I'm just curious whether you need a license to fish on the ocean... I'd guess so if shore fishing, but what about in a boat? You do until you get waaaay out there?

Here in Texas we have to buy a salt water stamp if fishing in any salt water. Total cost is $39 if I remember right. If you are in federal waters or beyond you do not need a license. I think it is 12 miles here, don't know if it varys state to state. It makes it interesting when the feds put a season on red snapper. Legally you can catch & keep red snapper in the off season as long as they are caught within the state waters (12 mile limit). I know several people who catch in Fed. water but claim they caught in state water. Don't know what would happen if they were pulled over coming back to port but inside the 12 mile limit.

Here in Maine we are not required to have a saltwater license but are required to have the fresh water one.

In Calipornia you need a fishing license for fresh and salt water. Then you need to have several different stamps for some types of fish. Will all the enhancements on youir license, it will cost you upwards of $50.00 per year and the is the resident's cost. Non-resident issued cost more.

You don't need a license at all if you fish from a city, county or state owned pier.
Two (2) days a year, you can fish free in Calif. So if you only fish twice a year, you can save a few bucks. :D

The restrictions in Calif. on the taking various types of fish, from different locations, is getting out of hand, thanks to the enviro-nazi's the leftist lobbist's.

Many commerical fishermen in my area have been bankrupted by these "do gooders" and have actually forced a number of these families to go on welfare. Many of the fishermen have been supporting their families for 30 or 40 years on this profession.

...Bob in Calif...

In Alabama, you need both a saltwater and a fresh water license. You can buy a combination license for $21.50. Actually, this is OK with me if they keep putting the money into boating improvements such as more and better ramps, etc.

Like Maine, in NY we are not required to have a saltwater license for recreational fishing, but are required to have the fresh water one.

In Michigan, you only need a freshwater license. :D But they still get you for an additional "all species" license if you intend to fish for trout & salmon. The total is $22.95, so not too bad!

Re: license to fish in ocean?

As far as I know, in Calif you can still fish in the ocean without a license if it is from any pier that is adjacent to the shoreline.

If you look above at what KnutWrench wrote, and what BobInCalif wrote, and what I wrote, you will quickly get the idea that we (in Calif) don’t have a clue. This would be correct…well, at least for 2 out of 3 of us. We mean well but we don’t know what we’re doing. That’s why we have Arnold for our gubner. Arnold is going to save us. Until we’re saved, you might be better off fish somewhere (anywhere) else.
