Re: Licence plate

Suppose it depends on your state. The plates on my car trailer and car dolly are both mounted sideways on the fenders - never had an issue.

Simple answer. Call your Dept. of Motor Vehicles or State Police and ask THEM.

Re: Licence plate

Your probably more likely to get a visit from the fiveoh due to a lack of a license plate light then you are for the plate being mounted vertical but the other posters are right call the DMV or go visit your state patrol and ask them for their opinion, believe it or not they are pretty helpful when asked.

Re: Licence plate

two things to keep in mind if you talk to a highway patrol. 1) They are under no obligation to inform you of the law, or even tell you truthful advice. Generally they are going to do their best, but not always... 2) Officer discretion. The one you talk to might have been at his job 30 years, is about ready to retire, and couldn't care less how your plate is mounted. The rookie just out of the academy that actually pulls you over, yeah he probably knows the radio code for 'plate mounted sideways'.

Personally, I've run plates sideways on the fenders of trailer before, never had an issue. The light problem is only an issue if you run at night.

Re: Licence plate

Not even sure if plate lights are required here in MN, no trailer I've owned has had one. Boat trailer has no plate at all since trailers registered for 3K and under just get a sticker for the tounge.

Re: Licence plate

i put my licence plate on my trailer side ways. Does anybody know if that legal?
Welcome to the forum.
You will have to look up the rule for your state.
But most states require the numbers to be horizontal.
Ask a LEO and they are likely to tell you "no problem", smile and say have a good day.
It is a frivalous infraction that can be used to pull you over later for no other reason.
Using the vertical plate as the reason if they can't see you doing anything else wrong.

Agreed, check your state's DMV website (I wouldn't trust what a DMV employee says, I want to see the regulation in print!)

And remember in these days of tight state budgets, your friendly LEO's are out there watching out for your $afety and $ecurity.

Re: Licence plate

i've been pulled over a few times for no plates when i knew i didn't have a plate $75 fines each time that my boss paid. not sure if its the law but the correct spot for your trailer plate is the driverside rear of trailer how ever my uncle runs his own garbage company and uses his plates on the trucks on passenger side and he doesn't get botherd so i would say as long as its visable your good. otherwise its a $75 fine to which oddly enough its a $75 plate in michigan.

edit: forgot to mention most likely if everythign else looks legal they wont mess with you for the paper work i know 2 cops and pretty much they tell me lot of stuff they dont mess with unless it becomes a safty hazzard or they think they can find more stuff wrong i/e unsecure loads.
