world record catfish:

KANSAS CITY, Kan., May 26 (UPI) -- A record 124-pound blue catfish caught in the Mississippi River didn't survive the trip from Illinois to Kansas to become a marvel on display for Midwest fishermen.
The world-record fish was caught Saturday night by Tim Pruitt of Fosterberg, Ill., and the Cabela's hunting and fishing outfitters company in Kansas City, Kan., promptly sought to have it for a live display.
But the big fish died Monday en route despite precautions taken by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Thursday.
"We're baffled by this," said Fred Cronin, a fisheries biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. "But we're talking about a fish that was very old, very heavy. The stress of being transported like that could have been too much."
A Cabela's spokesman said the company will have two replica mounts made -- one for display in the store, and another that will be given to Illinois for a display in a museum.

Yes when a big old fish like that is cought, and most likley on a through line. The old fish has had a long fight. Then transported in a boat, and then a pickup truck for a long time before it gets back in come water. It doesn't have much of a chance. They should be put back at once. They arn't good to eat when they are that big. A blue cat arn't that great to eat any time.

A fish like that, world record, should be treated like it just got married. Should have had a picture taken, measurements taken, and released back into the wild.

Cabela's is making replica's for themselves, DNR, but not the fisherman?

Here is Splash, the previous world record 121.6 lb blue cat from Lake Texoma, currently residing at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, Texas, being hand-fed by a diver:
Yea man they should make Tim Pruitt a replica. I read in the paper that he wanted to release it on the spot, but he was talked into letting Cabella's have it so others could admire. He only agreed to this if it would eventually be returned to the Mississippi. The article also said he was pretty upset when he heard the news. I think it's a shame.

What the heck? I'd have released the giant, whatever Cabela's or anyone else wanted to do. The heck with them all!

My trophies are all hanging on a wall somewhere in my brain. I don't need them on a wall in my house.

Cabela's paid 60,000 bucks for that fish.....and didn't blink an eye...
EDIT: I see in several other news sources, the fish was "Donated"....
We take some of the K.C. Cabela's store owners Pheasant hunting and we gave them (One of our main contacts) a call, and he said after all is said and done they will have 75-80 thousand with the replicas and the attempt to transport it...what I can't figure out is the pruitt dude said he donated it......Not according to the head cheese at K.C., because they had to work with the Il. fish and game in order to properly "Purchase" a wild fish due to local laws....seems like a lotta cash for nothing now...????

I thought it seemed odd to "donate" anything to a commercial enterprise. "a lotta cash for nothing...?" Maybe so, it was a risky investment in a promotion. They recouped some of that in all the media exposure; sure got us talking about it. :)

Wonder what they're doing with the body?
