So I have been working on an overheat issue with my 1989 Mercruiser 5.7 when I noticed the rubber hose from the upper drive to the transom had several cracks and breaks in it that were causing a water shortage not allowing the engine to properly cool. I got a replacement hose from the auto part store, cut it to length of the original hose and noticed that now it has a kink in it when the drive is in the full down position. I know that over time rubber hoses will stretch, so with that said, is there "scientific" method in cutting the new hose to the proper length or is this just a "cut a 1/4" off at a time until it doesn't kink method? I am putting the boat on our dock for the next 5 months this weekend and this is one of those things I know very little about and with a boat at 7,000 lbs I would rather not pull in and out while questioning the length of that hose being correct.
